Don’t make the same mistake made by a lot of visitors to Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park.
Built between 1937 and 1961, the park contains the original, highly decorated creations of Galloway, one of Oklahoma’s premier folk artists. According to the National Parks Service, all of the objects are made of stone or concrete and include painted decorations that show images of birds and Native American cultures arranged facing the four cardinal directions.
But when I chatted with a staff member in the gift shop, she mentioned most people pull in, see the totem poles, and skip the gift shop, missing entirely an amazing display of hand carved fiddles Galloway used to make in the evenings to unwind using only a memorized pattern. If you visit the park, check out these fiddles on display in the gift shop, and don’t be like the other travelers that miss out entirely.
